Michael Trotz, B. Sc., F.S.A., M.B.A.

Michael Trotz is a certified Actuary who has accumulated more than 25 years of experience in the profession. His experience spans several key actuarial functions in the life assurance area, including pricing, reserving and risk and asset-liability management.

He started his actuarial career with Bacon Woodrow, a leading firm of UK consulting actuaries and worked with that firm until 1991. Between 1991 and 1998 he served as Corporate Actuary to two leading insurers in Kingston, Jamaica. In these roles, he was responsible for a wide range of functions including pricing, reserving and risk management.

He then relocated to North America and between 2000 and 2015 held roles in the US division of Manulife as well as Phoenix Life Assurance, Sun Life (U.S.) and Genworth. In these roles, his responsibilities focused first on pricing and then on risk and asset-liability management.

At the US division of Manulife. he was responsible for leading a team charged with developing new Universal Life products for the US market. Among other projects, this team designed and implemented a ground breaking Variable UL product that became the company’s flagship US product during the period 2002-3. For this, he was awarded ManuLife’s Steps To Victory award for 2002Q3 in recognition of outstanding performance.

In his subsequent US based roles, Michael was responsible for identifying significant risks and developing risk and asset liability management frameworks to measure, monitor and mitigate them. His last role was at Genworth in Richmond, VA, where he was the Head of that company’s Life Products Asset Liability Management team.

Michael is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (2001) and also holds an MBA (2000) in Finance and Management from Columbia Business School in New York, attaining the Dean’s Honor List in the second, third and fourth semesters of the course. He started preparations for his actuarial career by completing a B. Sc. (First Class Honours) in Actuarial Science at the City University, London, U.K. in 1986 and became a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries (U.K.) in 1991.
